An enchanting Story of Sumba
The legend of Marapu, the guardian of nature
Marapu is a central part of the religious beliefs on the island of Sumba and plays an important role in the stories and fairy tales of the local culture. Here's a variation on a story about Marapu:
Long ago, when the world was young, there lived on the island of Sumba a wise shaman named Luhu. Luhu was known for his deep connection with nature and his deep belief in Marapu, the spiritual guardian of the universe. One day, Luhu told the villagers about a powerful being called Marapu, who watched over the elements of nature and made sure that the balance between sky, earth and sea was maintained. Marapu was the protector of the community and was revered and idolized by the people as a spiritual being.
In a vision, Marapu appeared and blessed the community by giving them wisdom and the teachings of nature. He emphasized the importance of balance, harmony and respect for all that lives.
From that day on, the people of Sumba lived in accordance with Marapu's teachings. They took care to protect and honor nature. The harvests became more plentiful, and the community prospered in peace and harmony.
The history of Marapu has been passed down from generation to generation to teach the importance of respect, harmony and balance between man and nature. Marapu remained a central part of Sumbanese culture and spiritual practices.
