Individual holidays in Indonesia east of the Wallace Line

The Wallace Line, named after the 19th-century naturalist Alfred Russel Wallace, runs between Borneo and Sulawesi and further between Bali and Lombok, describing the biogeographical boundary line, crossing which leads travelers into a new faunal realm characterized by high biodiversity and featuring many endemic species.

Your Adventure, Your Pace

At EAST OF WALLACE TOURS, we understand that long-lasting travel experiences come from authentic encounters. That's why you don't travel in large groups, but are accompanied by local guides on your tailor-made tour, who know their homeland like the back of their hand. Based on the framework of your individual journey through Indonesia, they show you:

  • the hidden island highlights of the Moluccas, Sulawesi, the Lesser Sunda Islands with Sumba, Sumbawa, Komodo and Flores, and Raja Ampat
  • secluded beaches and paradisiacal underwater landscapes
  • the perfect spots for observing endemic animal species
  • the incredible fascination of active volcanoes
  • fascinating markets and authentic local restaurants
  • and connect you with the locals

First indications of what a customised vacation in Indonesia planned by us offers can be found as travel packages on our website. These are tours that we have mostly undertaken ourselves in this or a similar way. We understand these as example offers, which you can either undertake exactly as they are or modify according to your wishes and needs.

This is how travel planning works with us

The planning of your individual Indonesia tour begins with your dreams and wishes. Share with us what excites and fascinates you, and we will put together a tailor-made itinerary that perfectly suits you.

Whether you want to experience the sunrise on a volcanic mountain, long for the perfect beach, crave a jungle experience, or want to discover the cultural diversity of Indonesia – we make your individual vacation in Indonesia an unforgettable experience.

While other tourists stay in Bali, you set course for an Indonesia that still lies beyond mass tourism. We plan your trip with passion and expertise – for an authentic, sustainable, and unforgettable experience.

Your Tour Through Indonesia: Step by Step

Typically, travel inquiries reach us through our contact page. When you send us your travel inquiry this way, you will immediately receive a confirmation of receipt. We will usually get back to you within 1-3 days to discuss your travel request. This is done either by phone or, if you prefer, by email

Once the initial travel concept is put on paper, we contact our local guides and resort hotels on our end. This can sometimes take some time with the guides, especially if they themselves are currently on tour and staying outside of places with internet connection, which is not uncommon for jungle, birdwatching, or volcano tours.

You will then promptly receive feedback on the current feasibility of your tour plan as well as an alternative proposal if certain activities, for example due to recent weather conditions or volcanic activities, are not currently feasible in the originally intended form. The tour plan can still be further adjusted by you from here at any time

Once you have your final tour plan in mind, we put together the price. From here, you also have the opportunity to do some fine-tuning in one place or another until everything really 'fits'.

Private & Exclusive: Your Journey with Your Own Guide

Our Indonesia tours are privately guided and created exclusively for you and your travel companions. They can be individually customized according to your wishes and combined with each other. For your tour, you have your personal guide. If you wish to visit different island regions that are far apart from each other, it makes sense to rely on a local guide from that island region, who will then either take over from there or (and this is something we can discuss) continue to accompany you with your guide from the first part of your journey. Such a constellation arises especially with birdwatching tours or other trips that particularly include animal observations. Whatever the final constellation is: on your entire Indonesia journey, you will be accompanied by a guide whom you don't have to share with anyone. Just contact us.

For insiders: East of the Wallace Line, Indonesia off the beaten track

The Malay Archipelago, consisting largely of present-day Indonesia and various other Southeast Asian states, is an amazing geographical phenomenon in one of the most volcanically active regions on Earth. While Indonesia has already established itself as an international travel destination, most visitors merely skim some corners of this impressive area, typically the business and tourism magnets of Bali, Java, and Sumatra.

It's worthwhile, however, to travel a little further eastward, crossing the Wallace Line and thus discovering a world that is equally unknown and fascinating. The true magic of the Indonesian island realm only reveals itself east of the Wallace Line. Here, an breathtaking mixture of tropical rainforests, wild volcanic landscapes, secluded sandy beaches as well as fascinating cultures, and a unique wildlife and underwater world awaits you.

Eastern Indonesia beyond the Wallace Line is an island realm far from the tourist stream with an incredible wealth of nature and culture. East of the Wallace Line opens up an archipelago that not only invites island hopping, with thousands of islands with countless secluded beaches, immersing in the Coral Triangle, the most species-rich marine area and one of the best diving regions on Earth. It is also the region with an incomparable fauna and flora, embedded in enchanting landscapes, with volcanoes that are among the most active on our planet, as well as dense jungle areas with their fascinating indigenous inhabitants and a surprising cultural diversity. Indonesia east of the Wallace Line is fascinating and is adventure, and it should therefore not be surprising if you find yourself drawn back there again and again.
