Tour description

Sulawesi: Bogani Nani Wartabone National Park Tour

This tour is the right one for you if you have always wanted to be a little more adventurous and experience a few days in the midst of breathtaking nature and unique wildlife and birdlife.
If you come to this area of Sulawesi on business - also no problem! For ornithologists, biologists/zoologists or journalists we can also frame this tour specifically for your needs.

Go on a discovery tour: Our Bogani Nani Wartabone National Park Tour takes you to a remote part of the island of North Sulawesi, where a whole range of animal and especially bird species are waiting for you, which are only found there. And to be close to it (and to be honest: there is no other way), you set up your tent camp right there in the middle of the jungle for a few days.

Your fitness level: For this tour you should have a good level of fitness to be able to move in rough terrain. The tour can be strenuous at times, as you are travelling cross-country in the jungle, possibly with camera equipment, in tropical temperatures.

The Bogani Nani Wartabone National Park covers an area of 2871 km². It has been classified by the Wildlife Conservation Society as Sulawesi's most important wildlife conservation site, as it is the habitat for many endemic species. Besides the very rare anoa, a small endangered wild cattle species, the deer boar, also known as babirusa, and the Sulawesi pustel pig, the park is also home to the gorontalo macaque and the hammered grouse, also known as maleo.

  • Dinner at the hotel (not included)

Day 2

  • Breakfast (included) at the hotel and pick-up by your tour guide.
  • Today you will travel by car to Gorontalo, the starting point of your discovery tour, to Bogani Nani Wartabone National Park. A long journey indeed, but certainly with one or two wonderful photo opportunities and in any case great impressions of the north of the big island of Sulawesi. The journey takes about 10 hours (Yes, there is a flight connection between Manado and Gorontalo. However, this is not served reliably).
  • Lunch en route (not included).
  • Arrival in Gorontalo; check-in at accommodation.
  • Dinner at accommodation or nearby (not included).

Day 3

  • Your day begins with an early breakfast at accommodation (included) and off you go...
  • ... with your guide and by car to Bogani Nani Wartabone National Park, which you reach after a 45 min drive. Once there, but not yet at your destination, you will change to an off-road motorbike (with driver), cross a suspension bridge and ride for another 15 minutes to the starting point of your trek.
  • Here you will first set up your base camp, in a simple wooden house, from where you will start and finish your jungle trekking tour through the park.
  • Over the next three days, you will move through a section of the park that has incredibly interesting things to offer. You will have the opportunity to take a closer look at the habitat of some of the numerous endemic species and to make acquaintance with many of the animal and bird species that live there. The following are some examples: Gorontalo Makake, Kobold Maki, Sulawesi Pustel Pig, Sulawesi Hornbill, Minahasa Barn Owl, Vermilion Owl, Sulawesi Pita, Satanic Nightjar and Sulawesi Hawk Eagle. You will also have the opportunity to visit a maleo egg-laying site with observation and breeding station, a 'sauna cave' and dripstone formations, explore hot springs at the Bone River including a warm water (!) waterfall and not to forget: enjoy ravishing views of the dense rainforest.
  • Simple lunch, dinner and overnight at Base Camp (included).

Day 4

  • Simple breakfast at Base Camp (included).
  • And then it's straight back out into the park for more exploration to see more of the many species of animals and birds unique to Sulawesi in their natural habitat.
  • When the sun is high and the animals are looking for a shady spot, it's time for lunch, which is served at Base Camp (included).
  • Afterwards you will have further opportunities for jungle life impressions, as you will go out into the jungle thicket again for another 3-4 hours until evening.
  • Simple dinner including overnight stay at Base Camp (included).

Day 5

  • Simple breakfast at Base Camp (included)
  • Morning jungle trekking for approx. 2 hours, where you will have further opportunities to take a closer look at the impressive park fauna. With a bit of luck, you might be able to catch a glimpse of one or two of the park's inhabitants that you haven't seen yet, as well as more of the over 100 bird species that can be found on Sulawesi. This trek again takes us through rough terrain.
  • Now it's time to pull up stakes and head back to Gorontalo.
  • Lunch en route (not included).
  • In the meantime it's afternoon and time to check in to your accommodation in Gorontalo.
  • Dinner at accommodation or nearby (not included).
  • Overnight stay in accommodation

Day 6

  • Breakfast at accommodation (included)
  • Now you start your return journey to Manado (on request you can also travel to another destination), where you can enjoy the scenery of Sulawesi's north passing by.
  • Lunch en route (not included)
  • Dinner at Manado hotel or nearby (not included)
  • Overnight stay in Hotel
