Tour description

Sunda Inseln: Best of Sumbawa Tour

Go on a discovery tour: During this individually organised private trip, you will get to know the island of Sumbawa, which is as remote as it is diverse. The tour takes you to the highlights of this island region, which is part of the Lesser Sunda Islands. You are attracted to such a trip because you are interested in Indonesia's scenically and culturally rich island archipelago and you like unspoilt places where the traditional life of the locals is still visible and tangible. In this respect, you tend to favour undeveloped tourist regions and the Small Sunda Island of Sumbawa encompasses all of this for you. Come and explore the Lesser Sunda Island of Sumbawa!

Your fitness level: Although you will spend a significant amount of time traveling by private car, you should still have a reasonable level of fitness for this tour, as you will cover some distances on foot and navigate through rough terrain. Additionally, don’t underestimate the challenge of activities in temperatures around 30 degrees Celsius, which can make everything feel a bit more strenuous. But no worries – our private tour is entirely tailored to your needs. You set the pace.

TOUR VARIANT: BIMA - LOMBOK

Day 1: Arrival Airport Bima - Bima Hotel

  • With the mighty Tambora volcano in view, you approach Bima Airport in the eastern part of Sumbawa, where your guide will welcome you with a warm ‘Selamat datang di Pulau Sumbawa!’ at the airport exit.
  • Since your flight arrives in the afternoon, you will be taken directly to your Bima accommodation for the night.
  • After checking into your accommodation, your tour guide will give you an introduction to the itinerary for the next day and an overview of the days ahead, allowing you to get into the right mindset for your Sumbawa adventure :-)
  • Dinner (not included) will be served at the accommodation or nearby.
  • Overnight stay at Bima accommodation.

Day 2: Bima and Its Cultural Heritage

  • After a not-too-late breakfast (included), you will start your tour today by exploring the beautiful Bima region.
  • Today you have the opportunity to visit a little, but very special village of the Bima region. it is considered the centre of traditional local weaving and its residents are true masters in weaving enchanting textiles. Come in and watch how they create their original handmade woven products before your very eyes.
  • After this interesting experience, it's time for the real highlight of the day. You will now visit the Cultural Heritage Centre. Here you have the opportunity to gain an insight into the culture of the Mbojo tribe, which is expressed not least in the clothing of its tribal members, but also in its characteristic wooden houses. Here you will get an impression of the former Bima culture, which has been preserved in this place and takes visitors back to centuries past. Old traditions and ways of life have remained alive here. This location is therefore a place that really should not be missed. And with a bit of luck, you will have the opportunity to admire the villagers in their traditional dress. You'll have plenty of time to explore the place and find the perfect spots for your souvenir photos.
  • In the late afternoon, you will return to your hotel to relax and reflect on the day's experiences.
  • Lunch (not included) will be served en route.
  • Dinner (not included) will be served at the hotel or nearby.
  • Overnight stay at your hotel in Bima.

Day 3: Bima Region Island Hopping - Saleh Bay

  • Your day begins with a delicious breakfast (included) at your hotel before your guide accompanies you on another day full of impressions. While yesterday's tour focussed more on the local culture, today's excursion is all about natural wonders. Don't forget your snorkelling gear!
  • The first stage of your journey takes around 30 to 40 minutes. It takes you from Kalimaya to the famous Pink Beach. You will first travel by car and then by boat to the north-eastern end of Sumbawa. Of course, you'll have both for yourself. The Pink Beach is surrounded by hills and the light red grains of sand are very fine. The gradation between the pink sand, the clear blue sea water and the green hills creates a very exotic panorama. And the underwater panorama is no less interesting. If you would like to explore the underwater world, you can go snorkelling here at Pink Beach. You have plenty of time before heading to the next stop on today's tour. Continuing towards East Sumbawa, you will reach Coconut Island. The route to the island leads through the Sape Straits, which can have choppy waves depending on the weather. On arrival at Coconut Island, however, you will be rewarded with an idyllic landscape and panoramic views of the island world around you.
  • Go underwater exploring with your snorkelling equipment or use the time to relax and read or simply enjoy the scenery around you.
  • Your lunch (included) will be served here on Coconut Island in the form of a small barbecue on the beach. Please let us know in advance if you don't like fish. In this case we would arrange a lunch box for you, which we would bring from the mainland.
  • Today's last stop will take you to Tanjung Meriam. This enchanting gem, also known as ‘Cannon Bay’, is tucked away in a charming hidden little fishing village in the east of Sumbawa. This stunning natural wonder is just a short boat ride away from Sape and is one of the special highlights on the island of Sumbawa.
  • Be mesmerised as you enter the 3.62-hectare breathtaking landscape decorated with massive hexagonal basalt columns (columnar joints) that stretch out before you for as far as your eye can see. These majestic formations, created by the forces of nature, form a symphony of geometric perfection against the backdrop of the ocean. The rocks around this beach are formed from volcanic magma that has cooled and hardened with or without the crystallisation process below and above the surface.
  • We are sure that a sense of wonder and inner peace will accompany you as you walk through this natural wonder.
  • We are sure that a feeling of wonder and inner peace will accompany you as you walk through this natural wonder. The interplay of light and shadow exerts a magical attraction and adds to the allure of this place. Take a moment to pause in the silence and let the beauty of Tanjung Meriam work its magic on you. For nature lovers and photographers, Tanjung Meriam offers countless opportunities to take the perfect photo. Its unique formations together with the coastal landscape create a truly remarkable backdrop.
  • Now it's time to return to the ‘mainland’ of Sumbawa and prepare for your next adventure.
  • You will now cross Sumbawa from east to south and check into the hotel of your next destination.
  • You will have dinner at your hotel (not included)...
  • ...and stay there for a comparatively short night.

The Lesser Sunda Islands stretch like a string of pearls across the turquoise waters of eastern Indonesia, and each island tells its own unique story. From the legendary Komodo dragons on Komodo Island to the traditional ikat weavers of Flores, from the wild horses of Sumba to the giant whale sharks of Sumbawa and the majestic Mount Tambora volcano – your holiday in the Lesser Sunda Islands becomes a journey through an entirely different world. Here, where rice is still planted by hand and centuries-old traditions continue to shape daily life, you experience Indonesia in its most authentic form. This is travel beyond the ordinary – raw, cultural, diverse and deeply rooted in nature. With our tailor-made tours in Eastern Indonesia, we design your individual journey entirely according to your wishes – combining nature, wildlife, culture and adventure in one unforgettable experience.

Experience Nature and Connect with People

The magic of your Sunda Islands holiday lies in the diversity of experiences. In the morning, you walk through rice fields where farmers still carry out their traditional work; in the afternoon, you snorkel above vibrant coral reefs; and in the evening, you enjoy the sunset from one of the many viewpoints – or even from the summit of a volcano. Every accommodation in the Sunda Islands that we have carefully selected for you reflects the character of its surroundings – from a simple beachfront bungalow to a stylish boutique resort hotel.

Encounters with local people make your journey to the Sunda Islands truly special. Whether during traditional weaving on Lombok or Sumbawa, at a whip-fighting ceremony on Flores, or while visiting a megalithic village on Sumba – everywhere you are welcomed with open arms. Our local guides not only know every corner of their homeland, but also build meaningful bridges between cultures.

Round Trip Through the Lesser Sunda Islands: Inspiration for Your Itinerary

A classic Lesser Sunda Islands round trip often begins on Lombok, the quieter sister of Bali. From here, your journey continues by boat (car ferry) or flight to Sumbawa, home to its (not yet entirely) world-famous surf spots. For many travelers, the absolute highlight is Flores – an island of striking contrasts with colorful crater lakes, traditional villages, and a rich underwater world. From Labuan Bajo, you can reach Komodo National Park, where the prehistoric Komodo dragons are at home.

For your Lesser Sunda Islands tour, we recommend planning at least one week per island. This allows you enough time to discover the many different facets of this unique region. Destinations within the Lesser Sunda Islands can be combined individually – from adventure to relaxation, everything is possible. If you would like to experience even more of Indonesia’s diversity, other island regions make perfect additions, for example:

Lesser vs. Greater Sunda Islands – Dream Destinations Compared

While the Greater Sunda Islands such as Java, Sumatra and Borneo impress with their vast size and iconic highlights like Borobudur or the orangutans, the Lesser Sunda Islands stand out for their intimacy and authenticity. Destinations on the Greater Sunda Islands already attract large numbers of visitors, whereas here in the Lesser Sunda Islands you can still discover genuine hidden gems.

Your holiday in the Lesser Sunda Islands means fewer tourists, more authentic experiences, and remarkable diversity within a relatively compact area. Whether you hike through the rice fields of Flores, stay in a traditional-style hotel on Sumba, or swim with whale sharks off the coast of Sumbawa – every day brings new adventures. The perfect alternative for those who already know Bali and Java, or who wish to experience Indonesia beyond the well-trodden paths from the very beginning.
