Location and amenities:
The Eco Resort Sumba Dream is a lovely small owner-managed bungalow resort in the east of Sumba Island and about 2 hours from Waingapu Airport. With its wild, spacious garden and the 6 rustic cottages made of stone and wood scattered throughout it, it exudes a rustic, charming charm, which is what makes this small complex so special. Really remote and quite a bit hidden There is absolute peace and relaxation here, framed by palm trees and the sea with an extensive bay and long, white sandy beach.
The 6 beachfront bungalows in local architectural style are functionally furnished and each have a large room with wardrobe, ceiling fan, bathroom with shower and - thanks to the solar panels - warm, but not necessarily hot, water and western toilet as well as a private terrace with sea views. The 3 standard bungalows are 24 m² in size. The 2 deluxe bungalows are just as big and also offer air conditioning. The 1 Family Bungalow is even more spacious at 36 m², is equipped with a ceiling fan and also has an additional room. It offers space for a family with a total of 5 people.
With the Eco Resort Sumba Dream, the very attentive French owners have made their personal dream come true and have also made the resort name part of their program. Their charming 'petit domicile' far from home combines French hospitality with an exotic ambience - a unique mixture that does not fail to make an impact. There is also a great focus on sustainability. In addition to solar panels that supply the entire resort with electricity, great emphasis was placed on the use of exclusively natural local materials in the construction of the cottages as well as on their natural integration into the existing landscape structure.
WiFi is available free of charge in the restaurant bar.
Occupancy: max. 5 people
Restaurant:
The resort restaurant, which conveys French cosiness, is directed by Blandine, one of the owners, and, like the bungalow cottages, is built of stone, framed with numerous wooden elements and provided with a high thatched roof that provides the room with good air circulation. French and local dishes are served, with the ingredients largely sourced from the resort's own garden. If you feel like it, you can accompany the restaurant staff in collecting mussels every evening - live ones, mind you - which are then processed into a delicious meal. If that's too exotic a meal for you -no worries- you can also opt for a tasty home-made pizza, which is freshly baked in the resort's own pizza oven. And when the season permits, you can also eat exquisite large tiger prawns.
The restaurant is located directly on the beach, and regular barbecues with freshly caught fish by Laurent and Christian provide culinary variety. Wish them luck, because you owe your dinner to their talent ;-) You can also end the evening in the small bar attached to the restaurant, where you can enjoy a cold beer, local cocktails or - depending on availability - one or the other glass of wine.
Activities:
- With its island location, Sumba is part of the Coral Triangle, the most species-rich marine area on earth. However, the island is not (so far) known for its diving resorts. The Eco Resort Sumba Dream is not a diving resort.
- Anyone who comes to the Eco Resort Sumba Dream will find, above all, peace and relaxation and, last but not least, themselves. In addition, the extraordinary resort offers a number of activities to keep you entertained. In addition to kayaking and stand-up paddling, the exposed location offers a great starting point for snorkeling with beautiful corals and lots of colorful fish.
- If you would like something a little more intensive in terms of activities, you have the opportunity to go on a horse ride, which can be arranged. Let yourself be enchanted by the exotic flair of your surroundings and enjoy the deserted beach.
- And if you prefer something even more sporty and exciting, you can also go on a breathtaking 'sport fishing' tour here. 'The heat is on' - You or the fish ;-)
- And if you're looking for more variety and haven't seen anything else of Sumba so far, then combine your stay with one of our Sumba tours and immerse yourself in Sumba's unique megalithic culture.

The Lesser Sunda Islands stretch like a string of pearls across the turquoise waters of eastern Indonesia, and each island tells its own unique story. From the legendary Komodo dragons on Komodo Island to the traditional ikat weavers of Flores, from the wild horses of Sumba to the giant whale sharks of Sumbawa and the majestic Mount Tambora volcano – your holiday in the Lesser Sunda Islands becomes a journey through an entirely different world. Here, where rice is still planted by hand and centuries-old traditions continue to shape daily life, you experience Indonesia in its most authentic form. This is travel beyond the ordinary – raw, cultural, diverse and deeply rooted in nature. With our tailor-made tours in Eastern Indonesia, we design your individual journey entirely according to your wishes – combining nature, wildlife, culture and adventure in one unforgettable experience.
Experience Nature and Connect with People
The magic of your Sunda Islands holiday lies in the diversity of experiences. In the morning, you walk through rice fields where farmers still carry out their traditional work; in the afternoon, you snorkel above vibrant coral reefs; and in the evening, you enjoy the sunset from one of the many viewpoints – or even from the summit of a volcano. Every accommodation in the Sunda Islands that we have carefully selected for you reflects the character of its surroundings – from a simple beachfront bungalow to a stylish boutique resort hotel.
Encounters with local people make your journey to the Sunda Islands truly special. Whether during traditional weaving on Lombok or Sumbawa, at a whip-fighting ceremony on Flores, or while visiting a megalithic village on Sumba – everywhere you are welcomed with open arms. Our local guides not only know every corner of their homeland, but also build meaningful bridges between cultures.
Round Trip Through the Lesser Sunda Islands: Inspiration for Your Itinerary
A classic Lesser Sunda Islands round trip often begins on Lombok, the quieter sister of Bali. From here, your journey continues by boat (car ferry) or flight to Sumbawa, home to its (not yet entirely) world-famous surf spots. For many travelers, the absolute highlight is Flores – an island of striking contrasts with colorful crater lakes, traditional villages, and a rich underwater world. From Labuan Bajo, you can reach Komodo National Park, where the prehistoric Komodo dragons are at home.
For your Lesser Sunda Islands tour, we recommend planning at least one week per island. This allows you enough time to discover the many different facets of this unique region. Destinations within the Lesser Sunda Islands can be combined individually – from adventure to relaxation, everything is possible. If you would like to experience even more of Indonesia’s diversity, other island regions make perfect additions, for example:
Lesser vs. Greater Sunda Islands – Dream Destinations Compared
While the Greater Sunda Islands such as Java, Sumatra and Borneo impress with their vast size and iconic highlights like Borobudur or the orangutans, the Lesser Sunda Islands stand out for their intimacy and authenticity. Destinations on the Greater Sunda Islands already attract large numbers of visitors, whereas here in the Lesser Sunda Islands you can still discover genuine hidden gems.
Your holiday in the Lesser Sunda Islands means fewer tourists, more authentic experiences, and remarkable diversity within a relatively compact area. Whether you hike through the rice fields of Flores, stay in a traditional-style hotel on Sumba, or swim with whale sharks off the coast of Sumbawa – every day brings new adventures. The perfect alternative for those who already know Bali and Java, or who wish to experience Indonesia beyond the well-trodden paths from the very beginning.
