The Sanubari, Sumba Island: You are looking for something special on your vacation, something out of the ordinary... a place of inspiration. And an exclusive location with a fantastic natural backdrop is just as important for you as enough privacy and space for individuality. It can be spacious and cozy and comfortable. The understated luxury of The Sanubari will enchant you - for sure :-).
Location and amenities:
The Sanubari, a small fine boutique resort, is located in the west of the island of Sumba and only about 50 minutes by plane from Bali. The chic and extraordinary resort is in a 100 Hectares of a reserve and offers the perfect ambience of an ancient and mystical refuge - a refuge for explorers and nature lovers as well as anyone seeking unique experiences in one of the last megalithic cultures.
Nestled in this beautiful landscape and located directly on a 2 km long white sandy beach, there are 9 luxurious pool villas (all but one) that come with... fine elegance and first-class comfort. High-quality materials and handcrafted furniture determine the interior design of each villa, all of which are equipped with Wi-Fi, air conditioning, ceiling fan, safe and minibar. The spacious window fronts offer not only lots of light but also fantastic views of the garden or sea.
The Garden Studio Pool Villa (3x) is 110 m² in size. The Beachfront Studio (1x) is the same size but also offers an outdoor bathroom, a desk and sea views. The Beachfront Pool Villa can be booked in two versions: with one bedroom (180 m²; 3x) or with two bedrooms and a lounge (230 m²; 2x). In addition, the Beachfront Pool Villas are each equipped with a private swimming pool, a living area and a bathtub.
Horse lovers will particularly get their money's worth at The Sanubari, as the elegant resort has a stable with a few horses that are available for a ride or two to pass the time. The long sandy beach offers the perfect location and a great backdrop. In addition to locals, you can also encounter herds of buffalo and wild horses strolling along the beach.
The resort also makes a significant contribution to maintaining Sumba as a paradise. The villas were built from local stone, teak and alang grass, and countless native trees were planted throughout the resort. An on-site farm supplies the resort kitchen with fresh food and what cannot be produced in-house is sourced from local farmers and fishermen. Solar panels are also installed and provide electricity and plastics are also avoided as much as possible. The resort team was recruited from neighboring villages and the owners have built a school as well as various water stations for the nearby villages.
WiFi is available free of charge, but can be a little interrupted.
Occupancy: max. 2 people
Restaurant:
The romantic, thatched, semi-open dining pavilion, with its carved pillars, ikat curtains and comfortable seating, is made of high-quality local materials and reflects the traditional Sumbanese uma keladas - peaked roof houses - in appearance. It is located directly on the beach and offers unobstructed and impressive sea views.
A variety of food is served here several times a day, with great emphasis on sustainability. Fresh ingredients come directly from the region or the resort's own garden: seasonal fruits and vegetables from local farmers and sustainably caught seafood and fish from the sea, the catch of which does not harm the rich ecosystem in front of the resort. Local and international dishes are served.
A bar next door with a similar architectural style provides even more stunning sea views and cool drinks, where you can spend the rest of the evening chatting with like-minded people in a cozy athmosphere.
Activities:
- The island of Sumba is part of the region known as the most biodiverse marine area in the world - the Coral Triangle. However, it is not (so far) known for its diving resorts.
- The Sanubari is not a diving resort.
- The Sanubari is a paradise and offers a picture-perfect setting with a breathtaking view over the extensive bay framed by palm groves, a long white sandy beach and turquoise blue sea. In addition to a spacious, enchanting garden that leaves plenty of space for private spheres, the in-house stud farm ensures even more freedom of movement - what a wonderful place to relax your body & your soul and let your thoughts flow freely.
- And if you are still looking for something different, you are warmly invited to explore the surrounding traditional villages and immerse yourself in Sumba's unique megalithic culture. Whether it's village visits, long walks on the beach or a trip to the mountains with breathtaking viewpoints - there's something for everyone here, best combined with one of our Sumba tours.
- Sumba was long considered an insider tip among surfers, but is gradually becoming more famous, not least because of its proximity to Bali. However, tourism is still limited and the somewhat adventure-motivated visitor can still enjoy deserted beaches here.

Ricefield Surroundings, The Sanubari, Sunda Island
The Lesser Sunda Islands stretch like a string of pearls across the turquoise waters of eastern Indonesia, and each island tells its own unique story. From the legendary Komodo dragons on Komodo Island to the traditional ikat weavers of Flores, from the wild horses of Sumba to the giant whale sharks of Sumbawa and the majestic Mount Tambora volcano – your holiday in the Lesser Sunda Islands becomes a journey through an entirely different world. Here, where rice is still planted by hand and centuries-old traditions continue to shape daily life, you experience Indonesia in its most authentic form. This is travel beyond the ordinary – raw, cultural, diverse and deeply rooted in nature. With our tailor-made tours in Eastern Indonesia, we design your individual journey entirely according to your wishes – combining nature, wildlife, culture and adventure in one unforgettable experience.
Experience Nature and Connect with People
The magic of your Sunda Islands holiday lies in the diversity of experiences. In the morning, you walk through rice fields where farmers still carry out their traditional work; in the afternoon, you snorkel above vibrant coral reefs; and in the evening, you enjoy the sunset from one of the many viewpoints – or even from the summit of a volcano. Every accommodation in the Sunda Islands that we have carefully selected for you reflects the character of its surroundings – from a simple beachfront bungalow to a stylish boutique resort hotel.
Encounters with local people make your journey to the Sunda Islands truly special. Whether during traditional weaving on Lombok or Sumbawa, at a whip-fighting ceremony on Flores, or while visiting a megalithic village on Sumba – everywhere you are welcomed with open arms. Our local guides not only know every corner of their homeland, but also build meaningful bridges between cultures.
Round Trip Through the Lesser Sunda Islands: Inspiration for Your Itinerary
A classic Lesser Sunda Islands round trip often begins on Lombok, the quieter sister of Bali. From here, your journey continues by boat (car ferry) or flight to Sumbawa, home to its (not yet entirely) world-famous surf spots. For many travelers, the absolute highlight is Flores – an island of striking contrasts with colorful crater lakes, traditional villages, and a rich underwater world. From Labuan Bajo, you can reach Komodo National Park, where the prehistoric Komodo dragons are at home.
For your Lesser Sunda Islands tour, we recommend planning at least one week per island. This allows you enough time to discover the many different facets of this unique region. Destinations within the Lesser Sunda Islands can be combined individually – from adventure to relaxation, everything is possible. If you would like to experience even more of Indonesia’s diversity, other island regions make perfect additions, for example:
Lesser vs. Greater Sunda Islands – Dream Destinations Compared
While the Greater Sunda Islands such as Java, Sumatra and Borneo impress with their vast size and iconic highlights like Borobudur or the orangutans, the Lesser Sunda Islands stand out for their intimacy and authenticity. Destinations on the Greater Sunda Islands already attract large numbers of visitors, whereas here in the Lesser Sunda Islands you can still discover genuine hidden gems.
Your holiday in the Lesser Sunda Islands means fewer tourists, more authentic experiences, and remarkable diversity within a relatively compact area. Whether you hike through the rice fields of Flores, stay in a traditional-style hotel on Sumba, or swim with whale sharks off the coast of Sumbawa – every day brings new adventures. The perfect alternative for those who already know Bali and Java, or who wish to experience Indonesia beyond the well-trodden paths from the very beginning.
